Yes, there is.  It is acceptable to file a material not prepared in a formal form (e.g., research papers, etc.) as an application document, whereas a formal application consists of a scope of claims, a specification, an abstract, and drawings.  Also, the filing date can be legally recorded, and the benefit by the priority right can be claimed.
